After completion of the 10 hour course, participants should be able to:

Apply knowledge of medical conditions with implications to driving
Assess the cognitive, visual, perceptual, behavioral and physical limitations that may impact driving performance
Integrate the clinical findings with assessment of on-road performance

GOTA Continuing Education Course: SCI Current Research

MAY 18TH, 2019

This course is designed to empower OTs, OTAs, and Students to bridge the gap between research and their own clinical practice. Do you treat patients with spinal cord injury, regularly or periodically? Want to help them participate in research, either in conjunction with therapy or after you discharge them? Need some tips for how to make sense of SCI research articles and apply them to your practice? This workshop is designed to help you know both how to educate your patients on opportunities to participate in research as well as digest and apply SCI research findings to your own practice. Join us for a hands-on, interactive morning at the Shepherd Center, a rehabilitation hospital for individuals with SCI and other neurological conditions, as we demystify current SCI research for the seasoned SCI therapist who feels a bit out of touch with the literature, the student eager to be “evidence-based”, and anyone in between.

Course Agenda:

9:30-10:00am	Check In
10:00-10:20am	Presentation – speaker intro, SCI anatomy review, general overview of SCI research & research projects at the Shepherd Center
10:20-10:40am	Hands-on practice accessing info about studies: participants will develop a treatment session in which they help 1 of 2 “patients” access study opportunities that may be appropriate for them (e.g. C4 incomplete, walking, impaired hand function, UE and LE spasticity, overweight; and T12 complete, no LE function or sensation, interested in robotics for walking, adaptive sports)
10:40-11:00am	Presentation – research basics review, resources for SCI rehabilitation research, recommended journals, websites, clinical takeaways from research over the past couple decades
11:00-11:20am	Hands-on practice applying evidence-based concepts to your practice: participants will design an intervention & a plan for measuring its effectiveness (What outcome measure? After how many sessions? If you don’t see any changes, what might you change? What might you conclude?)
11:20-11:30am	Post-Tet, Questions & Wrap Up
